The belief in Angels, is a very personal thing and one many people share. Even those people who are not particularly religious. We love to wear angel jewellery and to give angel amulets and keepsakes to our loved ones, to protect and keep them safe. We hang angel pictures on our walls and keep angel ornaments around the house. So is it any wonder then, that books about angels and angelic experiences, written by authors such as Doreen Virtue and Lorna Byrne are so popular. There is no doubt, that belief in angels is a powerful part of our psyche and one that shows no sign of abating. So let us look more closely at the phenomenon of Angels, who they are and why they are around us.
The word Angel is derived from the Greek word angelos, which means messenger. Malakh, the Hebrew word for angel, also means messenger, and both words nicely coincide with the Persian word for angel, angaros, similarly meaning a courier.

It is believed by many people the world over, that a Guardian Angel is appointed to look after, guard and protect us from the day we are born. It does not matter what religion you are, or what country you come from. You don’t have to believe in them, but you have one.
The Ancient Greeks were the first to record the existence of angels. They were often mentioned in the works of Plato. They have also been mentioned numerous times in the religious beliefs of Islam, Judaism, Christianity and many more.
Guardian Angels are said to exist to protect and comfort us in times of fear and pain. There have been many stories given by people who have claimed to have been saved by their guardian angel when faced with a life threatening or extremely dangerous situation. As if seized from the jaws of death, or plucked inches from disaster. One man reported falling from a ladder he had been using to fix the roof of his house. He said, it felt as if he was being held and that he floated to the floor rather then fell.
When I was 9 years old; I was just about to step out onto the road, without looking both ways as I had been taught. My mind fixed on the ice-cream van parked across from me. When I heard my name being called really loudly and felt myself being pulled back onto the curb. A car sped past at great speed. If I had carried on walking I have no doubt it would have hit me as it was travelling to fast to stop. I believe that day my Guardian Angel was looking after me, and from the many angel stories I have read by other people, they believe that too.

Over the years, there has been an increase in the number of people who have publicly declared their interest or belief in angels. Unlike some other unexplained entities, such as ghosts and orbs, it seems perfectly acceptable to say you believe in angels without fear of ridicule. You don’t have to be particularly religious to acknowledge their existence, either; although they do appear in most religious texts in some form or other.
I have been interested in angels for some years now. My first encounter with angels was when visiting a psychic. Instead of the usual tarot card reading, she pulled out a set of angel cards. I’d never seen these before and so I asked her what they were and why she was using them. She said that they were another tool that she used to help her communicate with spirit. She told me that angels were in spirit but, unlike spirit guides and deceased relatives, they have never been human. She went on to give me an accurate reading and I decided that I wanted to find out a lot more about angels and how to use angel cards.
