Divination Through The Ages

Share:

Divination is taken from the Latin word divinare, which means to foresee or be inspired by God. In ancient times, people believed that God had a plan for them and some cultures thought that they could predict what God had in store for them using divination. A lot of ancient divination was based around God’s feelings towards the people. They wanted to know if God was angry or happy with what they were doing on Earth.

In ancient times there were a lot of divinatory practices taking place. In Greece, there was an oracle in Delphi who attracted high-profile people from far and wide. She was called Pythia and people took what she said seriously. She became so popular that people were willing to pay huge sums of money to consult her. For those who were not able to get to Delphi, or who didn’t have the money, they used to consult seers instead. These were people who claimed to be able to read signs around them to predict future events. Most seers could only give a yes or no answer to a person’s question, though. There were a lot of battles in Greece, at that time, and the generals of each army would consult a seer on the battlefield before fighting commenced. The seer would slaughter a sheep and look at its liver to try to get a better idea of future events. The battle would not take place until the seer had given his or her prediction. Divination was taken very seriously in ancient times.
